CLAT Exam Paper Pattern 2016 for Under-Graduates

Total Marks - 200
Total number of multiple-choice questions of one marks each - 200

English including Comprehension - 40 Marks
General Knowledge/ Current Affairs - 50 Marks

Note: There shall be a system of Negative Marking wherein 0.25 mark will be deducted for each of the wrong answers to multiple choice questions.

The different subject areas of the exam are explained as under:

English Including Comprehension
The English section will test the candidates’ proficiency in English based on comprehension passages and grammar. In the comprehension section, candidates will be assessed on their understanding of the passage given, its central theme and meanings of the words used therein, etc. The grammar section will focus on correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, filling of blanks in the given sentences with appropriate words, etc.

General Knowledge and Currents Affairs

As far as general knowledge is concerned, the candidates will be assessed on their general awareness including static general knowledge. Questions on current affairs will test candidate’s knowledge on current affairs.

Mathematics

This section will test candidate’s knowledge on elementary mathematics, i.e. mathematics taught up to Class X.

Legal Aptitude

This section will test candidate’s interest towards study of law, research aptitude and problem solving ability. Questions asked may comprise of legal propositions/ principles and a set of facts to which the said proposition/ principle has to be applied to arrive at a most reasonable conclusion. Such propositions may or may not be ‘true’ in the real sense; yet the candidates will have to assume that the given propositions are true and answer the questions accordingly. An example of such legal proposition may be that any person who speaks in a movie hall and disturbs others who are watching the movie will be banned from entering any movie theatre across India for one year.

Logical Reasoning

The purpose of the logical reasoning section is to test the candidate’s ability to identify patterns, logical links and rectify illogical arguments. It will include a wide variety of logical reasoning questions such as syllogisms, logical sequences, analogies, etc. However, visual reasoning will not be tested.

Eligibility Requirements for CLAT 2016

Candidates (Indian Nationals only) seeking admission in Undergraduate Courses through CLAT should have obtained minimum 45 per cent marks in class 12 or its equivalent and in case of SC/ST category 40 per cent is minimum. Candidate should be below 20 years in age and 22 years in case of SC/ST category.
Candidates seeking admission in Postgraduate Courses should have minimum 55 per cent of marks in qualifying examination (i.e., LL.B./Five-Year Integrated LL.B./any other equivalent examination), and 50 per cent of marks in case belongs to SC/ST category.
Candidates appearing in the qualifying exam in the same year are required to have passed the qualifying examination at the time of their admission and must be able to submit proofs in support of their claims.

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralised test for admission to prominent National Law Universities in India. It is an all India entrance examination conducted by 14 National Law Universities (NLUs) on rotation, for admissions to under-graduate and post-graduate degree programmes (LL.B & LL.M.).

LL.B. Entrance Exam Guide for DU
Eligibility: To be eligible for appearing in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) to the two year LL.M. Degree Course, a candidate should have passed the LL.B/B.L. Degree or an equivalent degree from a recognized University with not less than 55% marks in aggregate (50% in case of SC/ST/OBC* and persons with Disability*).
(*Subject to reservation at the University concerned)
Candidates awaiting result of the qualifying examination can also appear for the test on the condition that they produce proof of having passed the qualifying examination with the prescribed marks before or at the time of admission.
Pattern of the Test Paper for Postgraduate Programme:
Total Marks: 200
Subject areas: Law of Contracts, Law of Torts, Family Law, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and Legal Theory
Total number of questions: (i) Objective Type: 50 questions of one mark each (ii) Short answers: 10 questions of five marks each (iii) Essay: Two questions of 50 marks each (Two sections containing three questions each out of which one from each section to be answered)

CLAT 2016 Application Procedure

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is an All India Entrance Test for admission to Under Graduate and Post Graduate Programmes. CLAT 2016 Application Procedure is given as below:-
  • CLAT 2016 Online Applications can be filled between January 1, 2016 and March 31, 2016
  • Candidates will have to register to generate a login id and password in order to apply for the law admission test
  • Candidates will have to upload a set of documents, photograph and signature.
  • After filling in the application form, they will need to remit an application fee in any of the modes – online or offline
CLAT 2016 Application Procedure
  • Click on the link provided for CLAT 2016 Online Application
  • Click on ‘New User Registration Here’ tab placed at the bottom of the page
  • Proceeding to the Registration Form, choose the course button you need to apply for, fill in your basic details including your name, parents’ name, e-mail id and mobile number, etc.
  • After confirmation, you’ll have to click on ‘Registered User Login’ tab placed in the page and enter your login id and password.
  • Fill in the qualification details and once entered, click on ‘Save & Continue’ button to upload the documents in next step.
  • Upload the scanned copies of your photograph, signature and Date of Birth certificates.
  • In the last step of the application procedure of CLAT 2016, you’ll need to remit an application fee - online and offline. You can choose either of the modes
  • Once the fees have been submitted, click on ‘Preview Application’ button and then check ‘I Agree’ box and finally click on ‘Submit’ button.
  • This will complete the final submission of CLAT 2016 Application Form

  • Minimum marks in qualifying examination for admission – As prescribed by Bar Council of India, Rules of Legal Education 2008, the applicant shall have passed 10 + 2 or an examination recognized as equivalent there to and have obtained 45% of the total marks in case of general category and 40% of the total marks in case of SC & ST applicants.
  • The maximum age for seeking admission into stream of 3 years course in Law is limited to 30 years, in general category. In case of SC, ST and others Backward Class applicants, it is limited to 35 years.
  • The maximum age for seeking admission into stream of 5 years bachelor degree course in Law is limited to 20 years, in general category. In case of SC, ST and others Backward Class applicants, it is limited to 22 years.

B.A L.L.B.(Honors)(Under Special Course of Study):
  • Candidates who has auspiciously completed/ is appearing Class 12 or equivalent are eligible to apply.
  • Candidate must be passed from a reputed University of India or OUTSIDE or from a Senior Secondary Board or equivalent constituted.
  • Minimal marks in qualifying examination for admission not below 50% of total marks in case of General category candidates, Whereas 45% in case of OBCs and 40% in case of Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe.
LL.B. (Honourse) (Bachelor of Laws)
  • B.A./ B.Sc./ B.Com./ Shastri (at least 10+2+3 pattern) securing a minimum of 50% marks inaggregate considering all the subjects in the three years except those subjects where only pass marks are required and which do not contribute to the total in the final (degree) mark sheet.
  • Any other degree under at least 10+2+3 pattern recognized by the bar Council of India for the purpose of admission to LLB course securing a minimum fifty percent marks in the aggregate seeing all the subject in the three years whereas there will be no percentage of marks in case of Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe apart from they must have passed the qualifying examination.
  • NOTE – As per directive of the Bar Council of India, the candidates acquiring High School/ 10th/ 10+2 through the distance education or external mode will not be designed eligible for admission in LL.B.

  • The BHU LLB Entrance exam consist 450 questions and the total time duration for the exam is about 2 hours (120 minutes) basis on General Awareness and Current Affairs, Common Legal Knowledge, Aptitude and Mental Ability.
